The United National Congress (UNC) is calling on Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to immediately remove Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi for his alleged involvement in the Boxing Day party boat debacle.
Mark is also calling for the “silent” Prime Minister to take action against three other senior Government ministers and warned that the Opposition would not allow what they called “this cover-up” to take place.
Opposition Senator Wade Mark yesterday hosted a media conference to call for the AG’s head and to also call out the Prime Minister for his continued silence on the matter.
Mark rehashed a lot of information already in the public domain on this issue where businessman Adrian Scoon, son of Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon, was detained by police on Boxing Day using his vessel, the MV Ocean Pelican to host over 100 people.
Scoon denied that the vessel was being used as a party boat and said he was given advice from the AG before he sought to convert the vessel into a floating restaurant.
Scoon also wrote to Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh who told him it was up to the police. Finance Minister Colm Imbert also sought to remove himself from the issue, saying that he did not authorise or approve Scoon’s special liquor license.
Scoon has since signalled his intention to bring legal action against the Finance Minister for rescinding his liquor license and said that he would include the AG’s office and the Ministry of Health in his lawsuit.
Scoon said he called the AG when police first arrived on the vessel.
“This pattern of behaviour and conduct represents a flagrant and brazen abuse of office by the Attorney General. His attempt to use COVID-19 public health regulations in order to facilitate a special license through various office holders, Minister of Health, Minister of Finance in an effort for this gentleman to have what is called a floating restaurant,” Mark said.
“The Minister of Finance has been captured in this ever-widening network of players involved in this unforgivable and indefensible saga that continues to unfold,” Mark said.
“These senior Government Ministers, the Attorney General, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Trade and Industry, along with the son of the son of the Minister of Trade and Industry, along with all the shareholders and owners of the MV Ocean Pelican, all of these players are involved,” he said.
Mark questioned why acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob has not laid charges on Scoon yet.
“As we speak, no one has been charged. Why?” Mark asked.
“Is there one law for persons involved in this criminal matter and there is another law for us and others? Why? There were many instances in the past where many people were arrested, where you invaded their spaces while they were having private parties in violation of the rules and they were charged immediately,” he said.
“How come in this instance, no one has been charged?” Mark asked.
Guardian Media reached out to acting CoP McDonald Jacob for an update but there was no response.
