The mother of a Diego Martin murder victim believes he was killed over something he didn’t do.
Jabauri Williams, 36, was driving his grey Nissan Cefiro along Topaz Terrace, Diamond Vale, at 10.30 pm on Tuesday when he noticed a vehicle driving closely behind him. He drove onto Garnet Road near the Diamond Vale Shopping Centre, where two gunmen dressed in camouflage clothing, who were seated in the grey Jeep, shot at him.
Williams jumped out of his car and tried to escape but was shot and killed by his attackers. The gunmen also shot at a woman who was sitting in the front passenger seat of Williams’ car but did not hit her.
Yesterday, his mother Andrea Williams said she believes his murder was linked to the killing of another Diego Martin man a year ago. She insisted that Williams was not involved in that incident or any other illegal activities, but said there were people who felt he was responsible and were determined to get revenge.
“As a result of that, they have been going at Jabauri over the years. They want revenge. I firmly believe that’s what happened.”
She said although her son, a mechanic, was aware of the threats, he was easy-going and simply did his best to avoid confrontation with the people he felt posed a danger to him.
“So he never used to bother. He used to say ‘Ma, I will pass in the front if they passing in the back,” Williams said.
“Jabauri was never any fighter. He wasn’t in any gang either, the only gang he would get involved in is women.”
Williams said her son was the father of five and had plans of travelling with his children next year after getting their passports.
She said she also intended to travel abroad next week but had to cancel plans after her son’s murder.
At the shopping centre where Williams was murdered, several bullet holes were seen on the wall outside the compound and in the glass panes of the ATM.
Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I officers will view CCTV footage of the murder as part of their enquiries.
