The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) officially installed its newly elected Executive Committee on Saturday with Ancel Roget at the helm for another three years. The installation, which took place during the union's General Council meeting, followed unopposed nominations held on 10 February 2025.
MSJ Political Leader David Abdulah officiated the event.
In a release by the OWTU, the union noted the installation occurred just five days after the 50th anniversary of Bloody Tuesday. On 18 March 1975, oil and sugar workers from the OWTU, the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers Union (ATSGWU), and the Transport and Industrial Workers Union (TIWU) were teargassed, beaten, and arrested while marching for peace, bread, and justice. Abdulah highlighted the importance of remembering that day as part of the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights.
Abdulah called for continued unity and solidarity within the labour movement. “After April 28, 2025, we must continue the important work we began, building consciousness to ignite a revolution of the mind,” he said.
