Six fishermen were attacked by gunmen at sea off Icacos Bay in Cedros on Thursday.
The fishermen were in two pirogues about three quarters of a mile off the coast.
Captain Sanjay Mahase, 48, and three other fishermen were aboard one pirogue, while captain Darren Ramdeen and two other fishermen were in the other boat.
According to a report, around 6 am, a white vessel with a 200HP Yamaha engine and six men armed with guns approached their vessels, which were tied alongside a Heritage vessel. The suspects, a local and five Venezuelans, announced a robbery.
Afraid for their lives, all the fishermen, except one, managed to escape onto the Heritage vessel. The bandits left with Sanjay’s pirogue, which was fitted with a $75,000 75HP engine, Ramdeen and his boat.
The other fishermen were rescued and taken to the Heritage Point Fortin Base. Police later received information that Ramdeen had returned home with his vessel and was in good health. Sgt Harripersad of the Cedros Police Station is investigating.
