One political analyst says the selection of Kareem Marcelle as the candidate for Laventille West, is a clear indication that the People's National Movement (PNM) is willing to select a candidate who can connect with a younger age demographic.
Political analyst Derek Ramsamooj says Marcelle's selection also indicates that he is able to effectively communicate with all constituents.
Ramsamooj says replacing current MP Fitzgerald Hinds was a strategic move by the PNM.
“Leadership of a political party is the single most influential aspect of governance,” he points out. “The leader has the responsibility of managing the affairs of the party to get political power and to keep political power.”
“What we would observe from both political parties, the PNM and the UNC,” he says, “is that the leader will ultimately make the decisions that he believes, (A) are in the best interests of the party, and (B) that he wishes to invite to be part of his Cabinet.”
And the political analyst believes crime reduction will play a major role in the PNM's ability to retain power.
“In the next PNM term, or for the rest of this PNM term, they need to address the situation of crime,” he points out, “and therefore, the performance of the Member of Parliament with respect to crime, may have some national repercussions.”
