The Ministry of Education is hoping to have the Point Fortin East Secondary School re-opened soon.
The ministry also expects that infrastructural repairs on the Couva West Secondary, Diego Martin North Secondary and the South East Port-of-Spain Secondary schools would soon be completed as well. This is according to permanent secretary Kurt Meyer during a press conference at the ministry’s head office on St Vincent Street Port-of-Spain yesterday.
Meyer indicated that a team from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Works were at the school yesterday and have been working on the building.
“We are reviewing an OSH prohibition notice on one of the blocks...the school could probably be opened today (yesterday) once that prohibition is lifted but we have to wait on the Ministry of Works engineering team to give us the all-clear,” Meyer said.
Minister of Education Anthony Garcia said these officials were “doing a substantial inspection to make sure that school can resume.”
He indicated that over $737,000 has been spent on the school since to July/August vacation on various repairs.
Minister Garcia indicated the school’s PTA declined to meet with him at his Port-of-Spain office despite their calls for a meeting. He said they wanted him to meet with them at the school. However, he indicated minister in the Ministry of Education Lovell Francis, visited the school yesterday and met with the PTA.
Garcia also ruled out the possibility of a new school being built soon “simply because we don’t have the required funding.”
Meyer anticipates work on the Diego Martin North Secondary School and the Couva West Secondary School should be completed by the end of the week. The works at the South East Port-of-Spain Secondary School are ongoing, however, Meyer said it’s “over 75 per cent complete.”
