Two men have been shot dead in Enterprise, Chaguanas, in what police strongly believe may have been a reprisal attack for the fatal shooting of nine-year-old Jomol Modeste.
The child was shot while playing at the African Grounds in Enterprise last Saturday.
The two have been identified as Marius Gueverra, 25, and Tevin Neptune Joseph, 29.
They were reportedly on their way to swear to affidavits in favour of four men detained in connection with Jomol’s murder but did not arrive to complete the transaction.
Three of the four suspects were released by police yesterday. Charges of arms and ammunition could be laid against the fourth suspect, police said.
The men were detained on Sunday and placed at the Freeport, Cunupia, Caroni and Couva Police Stations. Their lawyers subsequently filed a writ of habeas corpus.
In the 10-page document, the four men claimed they were beaten by the police. The four men are from Enterprise and Longdenville.
According to police reports, at around 3 pm on Monday, Gueverra and Joseph were on their way to pick up a third person—said to be a woman—when they were ambushed and shot by gunmen on Freedom Street, Enterprise.
Attorney Blaine Sobrian, of the Criston J Williams law office, yesterday confirmed that the men were friends of the four men detained. He said they were his clients who had intended to visit the law office in Port-of-Spain to swear to the affidavits for the four men who were detained at the time.
Residents yesterday claimed that a police vehicle was not far away and, despite this, no action was taken by officers.
Meanwhile, investigators said their probe is leading them to believe that the shooting was part of gang reprisal activity over the killing of the child.
