President Paula-Mae Weekes has nominated a fifth member to the Police Service Commission.

In a press release issued, a short while ago, the Office of the President announced that President Weekes nominated attorney Rajiv Persad to the commission after consulting with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, on October 25.

Like with the four other recent nominations by the President, the release stated that the nomination letter was delivered to both Rowley and Persad-Bissessar with only Rowley responding.

Persad, a former temporary High Court Judge and former Deputy Chairman of the Integrity Commission, currently serves as vice-president of the Law Association.

The move to appoint new members of the commission, which under the Constitution consists of a Chairman and four members, comes as four former members including former chairman Bliss Seepersad resigned following the controversy surrounding the commission's short-lived suspension of former acting police commissioner Gary Griffith.

Persad and the other nominees- retired Appellate Judge Judith Jones, leadership and management consultant Maxine Attong, Wealth Management and Firstline Securities Ltd head Maxine King, academic head of the Caribbean Institute for Security and Public Safety Ian Ramdhanie will have to be debated and approved by Parliament before they can be officially appointed.

They can then begin work on appointing a new acting Police Commissioner before going through the recruitment process for the substantive post.
