Former Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has responded to allegations of the Prime Minister's Residence being unfit for purpose by posting a video showing the residence when he exited office.
In the approximately four-minute-long video posted to Dr Rowley's Facebook page this morning, the former Diego Martin West MP shows the condition of each room—the bedrooms, the living and office spaces and even the kitchen—which seem to contrast the current condition highlighted by Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Barry Padarath.
On Monday, Minister Padarath said the residence, which is located at the Diplomatic Centre, was plagued with many issues such as mould, leaving Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar without any choice but to work from home.
Minister Padarath doubled down on his claims this morning, saying the video shared by Dr Rowley was quote "doctored".
He then conducted a virtual tour of the residence, which was shared live on Facebook.
According to the minister, the fact that Dr Rowley shared such a video can be considered a security breach. He also maintains there is a “variation in what the former prime minister has put out in a video, claiming that those were the conditions he left the residence in”, and what he and the team who toured the premises discovered earlier this week.
“It does not reflect what we met upon arrival here on Monday,” the Minister asserted. “There were several issues that were raised … The condition of the grounds … there were structural issues—large gaping holes in the moat, raw sewage … floodwaters in the moat ... the pool where many of the tiles have become loosened.”
On Monday, the PM’s Residence at the Diplomatic Centre, as well as the PM’s Office at Whitehall, were visited by a team that included Minister Padarath; Parliamentary Secretary Nicholas Morris; and Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Natasha Barrow, the Head of the Public Service.
