The Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) continued its work today in assessing and addressing the number of incidents caused by Thursday’s heavy rains.
Guardian Media understands landslides left villages in areas like Parlatuvier, L’Anse Fourmi, and Castara marooned for hours due to blocked roads.
Emergency crews reopened Runnemede to traffic earlier today, but cleanup efforts continued across other affected areas.
TEMA reported 16 incidents linked to landslides and fallen trees, with Bacolet, Black Rock, Delaford, Lowlands, and Mason Hall among the hardest-hit communities.
Residents and drivers were urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as emergency teams continued to work today, to restore access and clear debris.
Speaking earlier today with Guardian Media, TEMA’s director, Allan Stewart, said he expected additional reports on residential incidents to come in throughout the day.
He also underscored the importance of residents in affected areas continuing to exercise extreme caution, until given the all-clear.
“I would like to again make an appeal to the travelling public … these areas that are prone to landslide failure is real,” Stewart warned.
He added: “Road users need to look out for these episodes where slope failures may take place and as a result of that bring hazard or harm to users of the roadways.”
