Four major streets surrounding the Port-of-Spain prison were blocked off yesterday afternoon, sparking concerns from motorists and members of the public.
Officers on the scene told Guardian Media “it was not anything to worry about,” however, as it was just a training exercise.
Passersby were concerned about busloads of prison officers, police officers attached to the National Operations Task Force and fire officers outside the prison.
For several hours, parts of Frederick, New, Oxford and Pembroke Streets were blocked off to motor and pedestrian traffic by iron barricades and motorcycles belonging both to the T&T Prisons Service and the T&T Fire Service.
Heavily armed officers were also stationed around the perimeter walls.
Officers said it was part of a recruit training exercise headed by the acting Commissioner of Prisons Deopersad Ramoutar.
