A Trinidadian-born man is currently under investigation by New York City Police for the murder of his girlfriend.
According to a report in the New York Daily News, Romeo Borneo fatally slashed his girlfriend Erica Renaud with a knife, then slit his own wrists in what police believe was a murder-attempted suicide inside the couple’s Brooklyn apartment on Tuesday.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 5.10 am inside the couple’s fifth-floor apartment on Lefferts Avenue near Sterling Street in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
Investigators suspect Borneo, 58, pulled a knife on Renaud, 47, slashing her in the neck and killing her. He then slit his own wrists. Renaud, a cafeteria supervisor at New York University, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said it appeared she had been dead for several hours prior to being discovered. A knife was also recovered inside the apartment, police said. Romeo was rushed to Kings County Hospital in serious condition and under police guard but has not yet been charged.
Police said relatives indicated that Renaud, who also had Trini roots, had been saving money to move out of the home where she was staying with Borneo after their relationship recently turned sour.
Borneo’s aunt, Gloria Burnett, claimed that Renaud had been cheating and “threatened (Borneo) everywhere – on the street.”
“She would (be) embarrassing him to the fullest, to the fullest that he can’t take it no more,” she said.
But Renaud’s friend Tony Joseph said even if this was the case Borneo, who was from Princes Town, had no right to take her life. He told media he suspected something was wrong when she stopped posting on her Facebook page earlier this week. Concerned, Joseph said he reached out to her but still everything appeared normal.
“I spoke to her the day before yesterday, sometime in the evening. It was a normal conversation, Erica being Erica,” he said.
Renaud, whose father was Trinidadian, was a high profile member of the Caribbean cultural fraternity in Brooklyn and was a sought-after pannists in the community.
