Both Trinidad and Tobago are under a Yellow Level Adverse Weather Alert which will remain in effect until tomorrow, the T&T Meteorological Service has advised.
The Yellow Level alert status will be lifted at 6:00 pm on Friday (January 3, 2025).
In its latest advisory, the Met Service expanded the alert which originally covered only Trinidad. It notes that periods of rainfall are expected to affect both islands and offshore areas intermittently over the next 26 hours.
“The risk of thunderstorm activity is generally lower; however, the persistent nature of the rainfall can still result in localized flooding and ponding, especially in low-lying areas and along smaller river courses,” the Met Service explains.
Forecasters are warning of a greater risk for landslides or landslips in vulnerable areas, in addition to gusty winds during heavier downpours.
“Larger water courses remain contained at this time, but are gradually on the rise,” the Met Service warns.
The advisory notes that while the weather will remain unsettled overall, settled periods can also be expected.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and monitor weather conditions and should assess surroundings before venturing out.
The Met Service says to follow the instructions of government officials, avoid driving or wading through flood waters, and take all necessary precautions to mitigate potential impacts of any rough weather.
