Two men have appeared in court charged with multiple counts of murder, arising out of two separate incidents which occurred in 2020 and 2022.
In the most recent incident, Shakeel James, 28, of Princes Town, was charged with the murders of one-year-old Nova Shai Brereton, her mother, 32-year-old Sachel Kernell Elliot and the Attempted Murder of a 40-year-old man when he appeared before Magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine in the Princes Town First Magistrates’ Court, on Monday 30th January, 2023.
He also faced charges of Possession of Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, Possession of Ammunition to Endanger Life and Possession of Firearm to Endanger Life.
He is to reappear in court on 23rd February 2023. Elliot, her daughter and a third person, were at her business place in the Indian Walk district on December 19th, 2022, when they were approached by two men, one armed with a rifle.
The gunman shot at the three victims who all sustained injuries.
They were rushed to hospital where the woman and her daughter died while undergoing treatment, while the third victim was warded. One suspect was arrested in connection with the incident by officers of the Eastern Division, on Tuesday 24th January, 2023.
Investigations were supervised by Supt. (Ag.) Dhillpaul, ASP Persad, Insp. Hosein and Sgts. Elvin and Ramroop, all of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region Three. James was charged on Saturday 28th January 2023 by Sgt. Ramroop, following advice received from Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Honore-Paul, on Friday 27th January, 2023.
In the second matter, Kevon Oliver, aka ‘Ayha’ and ‘Oliver’, 36, of Point Fortin, appeared in court on Monday 30th January 2023, charged with the murders of Ceslyn Farrel, Patrick Farrell and Scyllas Cadett and one count of Arson, which occurred on February 27th, 2020. Oliver was charged with the offences when he appeared before Magistrate Alicia Chanka at the Point Fortin First Magistrates’ Court.
The matter was adjourned to Thursday 02nd March, 2023. The remains of the three victims were found at their Point Fortin home on February 27th, 2020, by Fire Officers following a fire.
A man was allegedly seen in the vicinity of the house with a red gas container in his possession. Investigations were supervised by Supt. (Ag.) Dhillpaul, ASP Persad, Insp. Hosein and Sgt. Forbes of the HBI Region Three. One man was arrested in connection with the incident on January 24th, 2023.
Oliver was charged by WPC George, also of HBI Region Three, on Monday 30th January, 2023, following advice received from Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Honore-Paul, on Friday 27th January, 2023.
