Two young men died, and another was injured after a car crashed into a light pole following an attempt to speed past a police roadblock in Pointe-a-Pierre on Monday night.
The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Kelita Jamal King of Battoo Boulevard, Marabella, and Trey Collymore of Harmony Hall, Marabella.
Around 9:40 pm, officers from the Marabella Police Station were conducting a road traffic exercise along the Southern Main Road near Tropical Plaza. They attempted to stop a red Nissan Tiida, which sped past them. The officers pursued the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed into a light pole near Flower Pot Beach.
Police reported that the three occupants were pinned in the back seat. Fire officers from the Mon Repos Fire Station responded and used the jaws of life to extricate them.
King died at the scene, while Collymore succumbed to his injuries at the San Fernando General Hospital. The third passenger, Joel Yarde, 16, of Battoo Avenue, Marabella, remains hospitalised in stable condition.
