Two po­lice of­fi­cers were in­jured this week while on du­ty, with one of­fi­cer be­ing wound­ed while in pur­suit of a sus­pect, and the oth­er get­ting in­jured in a ve­hic­u­lar ac­ci­dent.

The first in­ci­dent oc­curred at about 1:30 am on Tues­day 2 March 2021.  It in­volves a po­lice of­fi­cer re­port­ed­ly be­ing shot while pur­su­ing a sus­pect off the Ca­roni Sa­van­nah Road, Ca­roni.

Guardian Me­dia un­der­stands that of­fi­cers of the Ch­agua­nas Po­lice Sta­tion and the Ch­agua­nas Mu­nic­i­pal Po­lice had in­ter­cept­ed a ve­hi­cle that was oc­cu­pied by five men.  A search was be­ing con­duct­ed off the road­way for an­oth­er sus­pect.

One of the of­fi­cers en­tered the bushy area off the road­way and was shot in the right foot.

He raised an alarm and was tak­en for med­ical treat­ment.

The of­fi­cer, a cor­po­ral, cur­rent­ly is ward­ed at the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex.

The oth­er in­ci­dent took place at about 7:45 pm on Wednes­day 3 March 2021.  

Re­ports are that PC Gomez, who is as­signed to the TTPS Ca­nine Branch in Ca­roni, parked an un­marked po­lice ve­hi­cle on the com­pound of the K-9 Sec­tion lo­cat­ed at Cu­mu­to Bar­racks, Cu­mu­to.  He re­port­ed­ly placed the man­u­al gearshift on neu­tral and pulled the hand brakes in­to an up­right po­si­tion.

How­ev­er, when the of­fi­cer moved his feet off the ped­als to ex­it the ve­hi­cle, it be­gan to re­verse caus­ing Gomez to fall back­wards, and out of the ve­hi­cle, with his left foot stuck be­tween the ped­als.  It re­sult­ed in him be­ing dragged for some 30 feet.

The ve­hi­cle then struck a marked po­lice ve­hi­cle, which was parked against a wall, and stopped.

Gomez re­ceived in­juries to the up­per left arm, low­er back, left an­kle and right el­bow.  

The dri­ver’s door, as well as the left rear tail­light, fend­er, rear bumper, and tail­gate of the un­marked ve­hi­cle were dam­aged.  The marked po­lice ve­hi­cle sus­tained dam­age to the bon­net, while the wall of the Cu­mu­to Bar­racks Com­pound al­so was dam­aged.

PC Gomez re­ceived med­ical treat­ment at the San­gre Grande Dis­trict Hos­pi­tal.  He is said to be rest­ing and re­cov­er­ing from his in­juries at home.
