The United National Congress (UNC) has issued a statement congratulating the Star Team—led by Opposition Leader and member of Parliament for Siparia, Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC MP—on its victory in the party’s recent internal elections.
The elections, which were held on Sunday 26 June 2022, saw some 13,000 people brave the inclement weather to ensure they had a say in who would lead their political party over the next few years. Some 95% of those who voted returned Kamla Persad-Bissessar as Political Leader, and ensured her slate, the Star Team, ascended to positions of authority and responsibility on the party’s executive.
“The results show that the UNC is united and strong as never before. All candidates are congratulated for their participation,” the release issued by the UNC stated.
“The preliminary figures as of last night showed that approximately 13,000 people came out to vote, despite the adverse weather warning, heavy rain, thunder, flooding, and power outages in much of the country. The Star team received over 95% of the votes cast,” it said. “Congratulations once again to the Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the Star Team for their overwhelming landslide victory.”

The UNC release also made a clarion call for the membership to knuckle down to ensuring the ruling People’s National movement is removed from power in upcoming national elections.
“Now it is time to put the internal elections behind, unite and work together as one party to defeat the PNM and win the next local and general elections, whenever they are held,” the party’s statement said.
It also noted that constituency elections are the next internal elections scheduled for the party as the UNC continues to prepare for government.
