Michelle-Lee Ahye reached the semifinal round of the women’s 60m sprint at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships, which comes to an end in Nanjing, China on Sunday.
Ahye was sixth in the first of three semifinals in 7.31 seconds on Saturday. The 2018 Commonwealth Games women’s 100m champion was aiming to finish in the first two spots in the semis to advance to the final (also on Saturday) for a fifth time after doing so in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2022.
The 2015 World Outdoor Championships women’s 4x100m bronze medallist was beaten to the line by Zaynab Doss of Italy (7.07), Great Britain’s Amy Hunt (7.15), Chinese Xiaojing Liang (7.17) and Joella Lloyd of Antigua and Barbuda and Jamaican Natasha Morrison, who both clocked 7.25.
Julia Henriksson of Sweden (7.35) and Bahamian Camille Rutherford (7.41) finished behind Ahye.
Ahye’s time of 7.31 was 23rd quickest overall and shy of her season’s best of 7.24, while Dusso was the fastest.
The 2011 Pan American Junior 100m winner reached the semis after finishing fifth in Heat Five in the preliminary round earlier on Saturday in 7.28. Ewa Swoboda won the heat (7.16) with Lang (7.17), Morison (7.20) and Switzerland’s Geraldine Frey (7.26) all getting to the line ahead of Ahye.
The four-time Carifta champion missed a top three placing to automatically book a lane in the semifinal round. However, her time was the sixth time qualifier. Dusso was the top performer once again (7.09).
In the finals, also held on Saturday, Majunga Kambundji of Switzerland raced to gold in 7.04 ahead of Dusso (7.06) and Patrizia Van Der Weken of Luxembourg (7.07).
Kambundji regains the title she won at the 2022 World Indoors in Belgrade, Serbia. She was also third in 2018.
Ahye is one of two local athletes at the World Indoors. T&T’s other entrant, Tyra Gittens-Spotsville competed in the women’s long jump final, which got underway at 10:19 on Saturday night (TT time)/10:19 on Sunday morning (China time).
