T&T’s Makeda Bain made it a back-to-back sweep of the Under-14 Girls Division titles and her third time achieving the feat when the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC)-Trinidad International Junior (U-14) Tennis Tournament ended at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, Wednesday.
Firstly, the 12-year-old top-ranked Bain of Tobago spanked fellow T&T player and third seed, Cyra Ramcharan, 6-2, 6-2 to secure the Girls Singles title.
This was after Bain defeated another local player, Cherdine Sylvester, 6-1, 6-2, in their semifinal on Tuesday, the same outcome as their meeting at the same stage last weekend in Barbados, while Ramcharan beat Suriname’s Cybelle Ferrier 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (retired) in their semifinal.
And in the girls doubles decider, Bain and Ferrier followed up their triumph in the Barbados leg last weekend at the Raymond Forde National Tennis Centre in St Michael by overcoming Cyra Ramcharan and her sister Suri Ramcharan 7-5, 6-4.
Bain and Ferrier won their semifinal against another sister pairing, Karissa Mohammed and Samiyah Mohammed, 6-1, 6-3, while the Ramcharan sisters edged past second-ranked Sofia Gutierrez of El Salvador and Sylvester, 7-6, 6-3.
Last weekend, Bain completed a second straight clean sweep of the Girls Under-14 titles in Barbados when she defeated Ramcharan 7-5, 6-0 in the singles final.
In the semis, Bain dumped Sylvester 6-2, 6-2, and Ramcharan upstaged second-ranked Canadian Katelyn Pasula 7-5, 6-3, and in the doubles final, Bain and Ferrier came from a set down to beat Shreya Rawat of St Kitts/Nevis and Sylvester 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
This was after Bain and Ferrier won their semifinal over Barbadian Adia Hope and Pasula 6-2, 6-0, while Rawat and Sylvester battled past the Ramcharan sisters 6-3, 6-7, 10-3.
Last year, Bain won the doubles title with Curacao’s Keziah Fluonia over Ferrier and Curacao’s Emilia Tedder.
Brown, Hills beaten in Under-14 Boys semis
Unseeded T&T players Jack Brown and Josiah Hill were both beaten in their respective Under-14 Boys Singles semifinals to miss out on an all-local final.
Brown was stopped in his bid to reach the final by second-ranked Barbadian Zane Kirton, 2-6, 3-6, while Hills proved no match for the top-ranked Mateo Gutierrez of El Salvador, 2-6, 0-6.
In the doubles semifinals, T&T’s Christopher Khan paired with Kirton to oust locals Oliver Harragin and Jacob Jacelon 2-6, 6-7, while top-ranked Gutierrez and Hills beat locals Brown and Jaysean Wells 6-1, 7-5. The tournament will conclude today from 9 am.
Walker ousted in ITF U-18 Singles round-of-16
T&T’s Shiloh Walker was beaten in the Girls Under-18 Singles round-of-16 when the J30 International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Tournament continued at the Raymond Forde National Tennis Centre in St Michael, Barbados, yesterday.
A 6-4, 6-4 winner over Micah Austin on Monday in the opening round-of-32, Walker suffered a 1-6, 0-6 loss to Canada’s Jolie Mastre with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.
And in the doubles, Walker and Great Britain’s Imogen Lines was expected to face Canada’s Camille Michel and Sofia Sundas of Italy in a late match while T&T’s Nirav Dougdeen and Barbadian Dimitri Kirton were scheduled to meet Canadians Kye Mc Dadi and Thomas O’Neil .
On Monday, Dougdeen, the lone T&T player in the Boys Under-18 Singles went under to Great Britain’s Levi Taylor 1-6, 0-6.
