Bishop's High School (Tobago) were crowned the first-ever Boys' Open champion at the National Secondary Schools Netball Championships at the Southwest Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Egypt Village, Point Fortinon Tuesday.
Bishop's played unbeaten against Belmont Secondary and Success Laventille Secondary to take the inaugural title in the competition hosted by the T&T Secondary Schools Netball Association. The Chris Roberts-captained squad first defeated Belmont 20-13 and then Success Laventille 32-5. Belmont recorded one win with a 20-4 victory over Success Laventille.
Roberts and Solomon Okali led the scoring for the Tobago District champions. Okali was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the boys' category.
Bishop's 13 & Under girls retained their national crown winning all matches played in a round-robin format.
Khemayah Anderson led her teammates to a 7-2 triumph over St Francois Girls in the first match of the day. The Joan Bedlow-coached lasses then overcame Diego Martin Central 13-1 before dismissing St Joseph College, 15-0.
Bishop's was due to play Point Fortin East in the final match of the day which was due to get underway at 6 pm. However, the tournament officials opted not to play the match ruling that the outcome would not have affected the overall results.
St Francois Girls team was second with Diego Martin Central beating Point Fortin East 2-0 in the third spot in a shortened playoff match due to the late time of the day and also because the venue was due to host another sporting event which was due to start at 5 pm. Anderson won the MVP prize.
In the shooting competition earlier in the day, Natalia Atkins (Belmont Secondary) and Jossiah Rodriguez (Diego Martin Central) took home the individual shooting trophies.
Atkins netted the most shots (30) to beat the Bishop's duo of Akaida Muir (28) and Anderson (28). However, Bishop's retained the team shooting title with 84 goals. St Francois Girls (53) and Point Fortin East (51) ended in second and third positions, respectively.
In the Boys' Open shooting contest, Rodriquez was impressive with his attempts converting 36, leaving Roberts (33) and Okali (30) in the minor placings.
Belmont Secondary was first in the team competition with 96 respectively ahead of Diego Martin Central (88) and Bishops (81).
The second day of the Finals is set for Wednesday with the Girls' 15 & Under Shooting and Play-off.
The Girls 20 & Under class is on Thursday, the third and final day of the competition.
