Bish­op's High School (To­ba­go) were crowned the first-ever Boys' Open cham­pi­on at the Na­tion­al Sec­ondary Schools Net­ball Cham­pi­onships at the South­west Re­gion­al In­door Sports Are­na in Egypt Vil­lage, Point Forti­non Tues­day.

Bish­op's played un­beat­en against Bel­mont Sec­ondary and Suc­cess Laven­tille Sec­ondary to take the in­au­gur­al ti­tle in the com­pe­ti­tion host­ed by the T&T Sec­ondary Schools Net­ball As­so­ci­a­tion. The Chris Roberts-cap­tained squad first de­feat­ed Bel­mont 20-13 and then Suc­cess Laven­tille 32-5. Bel­mont record­ed one win with a 20-4 vic­to­ry over Suc­cess Laven­tille.

Roberts and Solomon Okali led the scor­ing for the To­ba­go Dis­trict cham­pi­ons. Okali was named the Most Valu­able Play­er (MVP) in the boys' cat­e­go­ry.

Bish­op's 13 & Un­der girls re­tained their na­tion­al crown win­ning all match­es played in a round-robin for­mat.

Khe­mayah An­der­son led her team­mates to a 7-2 tri­umph over St Fran­cois Girls in the first match of the day. The Joan Bed­low-coached lass­es then over­came Diego Mar­tin Cen­tral 13-1 be­fore dis­miss­ing St Joseph Col­lege, 15-0.

Bish­op's was due to play Point Fortin East in the fi­nal match of the day which was due to get un­der­way at 6 pm. How­ev­er, the tour­na­ment of­fi­cials opt­ed not to play the match rul­ing that the out­come would not have af­fect­ed the over­all re­sults.

St Fran­cois Girls team was sec­ond with Diego Mar­tin Cen­tral beat­ing Point Fortin East 2-0 in the third spot in a short­ened play­off match due to the late time of the day and al­so be­cause the venue was due to host an­oth­er sport­ing event which was due to start at 5 pm. An­der­son won the MVP prize.

In the shoot­ing com­pe­ti­tion ear­li­er in the day, Na­talia Atkins (Bel­mont Sec­ondary) and Jos­si­ah Ro­driguez (Diego Mar­tin Cen­tral) took home the in­di­vid­ual shoot­ing tro­phies.

Atkins net­ted the most shots (30) to beat the Bish­op's duo of Akai­da Muir (28) and An­der­son (28). How­ev­er, Bish­op's re­tained the team shoot­ing ti­tle with 84 goals. St Fran­cois Girls (53) and Point Fortin East (51) end­ed in sec­ond and third po­si­tions, re­spec­tive­ly.

In the Boys' Open shoot­ing con­test, Ro­driquez was im­pres­sive with his at­tempts con­vert­ing 36, leav­ing Roberts (33) and Okali (30) in the mi­nor plac­ings.

Bel­mont Sec­ondary was first in the team com­pe­ti­tion with 96 re­spec­tive­ly ahead of Diego Mar­tin Cen­tral (88) and Bish­ops (81).

The sec­ond day of the Fi­nals is set for Wednes­day with the Girls' 15 & Un­der Shoot­ing and Play-off.

The Girls 20 & Un­der class is on Thurs­day, the third and fi­nal day of the com­pe­ti­tion.
