Caribbean Women Sports (CWS) and Bmobile have partnered to empower, inspire and build community among women in sports in T&T.
CWS, the premier media company for women’s sports coverage, will host its inaugural Women in Sports Day on November 9 at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex.
The event will feature some of T&T’s top national athletes including the likes of national footballer Victoria Swift, current West Indies Women off-spinner Karishma Ramharack, former WI players Anisa Mohammed and Britney Cooper, T&T and professional volleyballer, Krystle Esdelle, T&T and professional netballer, Kalifa McCollin, T&T rugby player and vice-president of the T&T Rugby Union, Kanisha Vincent and other stand out athletes.
CWS’ Sports Day is your typical sports day featuring fun events like tug-of-war, relays, obstacle courses, sack races etc. What makes the event unique, however, is that the four competing teams will comprise eight national athletes and two secondary school athletes each. Additionally, each team will be pre-assigned a women’s sports project, with a grant going to the respective project of the winning team.
Founded by Shari John to provide media and marketing support for women in sports who often receive less coverage than their male counterparts, the sports day is intended to inspire and create networking opportunities for athletes.
Speaking on the event, John explained that quite often while engaging national athletes she has found that those in a particular sport will be unaware of standout athletes in others. However, she believes that it is important that women in sports support each other first and foremost on the path to increasing visibility and support for themselves.
“I have always found it a bit unfortunate that top athletes in one sport, would be completely unaware of their counterparts in others. The sports day is meant to bridge that gap and bring everyone together to compete and have fun, in a non-sport specific environment geared towards creating new friendships,” said John.
The teams will be mixed so that there is rarely a case of athletes from the same sport being on a team together.
Speaking on behalf of bmobile, Kashif Greaves, Assistant Vice President - Consumer Sales, shared that the company was particularly excited about the concept and jumped on board immediately.
“At Bmobile, we were eager to partner on this event because we saw it as an opportunity to contribute to the empowerment of women and girls across T&T who aspire to be athletes at any level while celebrating those who have achieved so much for the country,” said Greaves. “It is also perfectly aligned with our commitment to youth and sport and we are happy to be a part of it.”
He said not only do women in sports deserve to be celebrated for their hard work but their stories have the potential to inspire many others.
“We hope that through our support, we can help to create even greater visibility for these amazing athletes and their sport,” said Greaves. “We urge everyone to come down to the event, meet the athletes and be part of creating community among our women in sport.”
Other sponsors of the event include NLCB, Avelle Branding Company, Carib, UDECOTT and Self Authored Media.
The event begins at 9 am with a meet and greet, so that aspiring athletes have an opportunity to interact with their sporting heroes. The actual events will then commence at 10 am.
