Two goals from Wayne Edwards and another from the stick of Nicholas Siu Butt earned the "Calypso Stickmen" a 3-1 victory over Brazil for the gold medal and title in the men's final of the Junior Pan American Hockey Challenge which came to an end in Bridgetown, Barbados on Sunday.
But the country's women's team had to settle for fourth after going down to Guyana 1-0 in the third/fourth-place playoff. Captain Sarah Klautky scored the lone item in the 52nd minute to help the Guyanese take the bronze medal.
Yesterday's win was sweet revenge for the men in red, white and black after they were beaten by the South Americans 1-0 in the final match of Pool one in the Under-21 Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Yesterday's meeting at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Centre had a similar start to Saturday's match with the Brazilians taking the early advantage when Luigi Lunardi found the nets in the 10th minute from the field.
Siu Butt, who for most of the group matches played the role of the architect, this time found the equalising item in the 26th minute of play that lifted the team's confidence. Saturday's loss was the team's only defeat of the tournament, but after Siu Butt's goal which lifted the team, Edwards took control with a commanding performance that sew-up the win afterwards.
Edwards fired the junior "Calypso Stickmen" ahead of the first time in the 30th minute. And despite the challenges by the Brazilians, the Edwards hammered the final nail in their coffin five minutes later (35th minute) to seal the win.
The first-time Junior Pan Am Challenge was conceptualised to bring together emerging field hockey talent from across the Americas and provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage for both men and women.
The Brazilians received the silver medals while Venezuela prevailed over the host nation 4-3 from the penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation time for the third-place spot. Earlier in a battle for fifth and sixth, Guyana got the better of Guatemala 3-0.
By qualifying to the gold medal match, both T&T and Brazil secured the two available spots from the tournament to the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay from August 10-19.
