The Trials to select this country's track and field contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) are set for the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Saturday and Sunday.
The CYG will be hosted in T&T from August 4-11 and the local Under-18 athletes will be looking to secure their spot on the home team. The action gets underway at 9.30 am on each day.
Carifta Boys U-17 long jump champion Imanni Matthew along with fellow Carifta medallists Alexxe Henry, Janae De Gannes, Caleb Campbell, Giana Paul, Kernesha Shelbourne and Peyton Winters are among those going after the CYG qualifying standards.
The long and triple jump events will not be contested over the weekend as there are no jumping pits at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.
According to the schedule released by the National Association for Athletics Administration (NAAA), the local track and field governing body, competition in the horizontal jumps will be held on Tuesday (June 13) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, for the Tobago competitors and at the warm-up track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo for the Trinidad entrants.
The Trials for the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-18 and U-23 and the Pan American U-20 Championships are also on this weekend at the same venue. The NACAC U-18/U23 Championships are set for San Jose, Costa Rica on July 21-23 and Pan Am U-20s in Mayaguez, Puerto (August 4-6).
In more track and field news, Leah Bertrand and her Ohio State teammates qualified for the women's 4x100m finals at the NCAA Division One Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place in Austin, Texas, USA. In the semifinals on Thursday night, Ohio State was first in heat two in a school record of 42.68 seconds. The time was third-fastest behind Texas (41.55 -NCAA record) and Kentucky (42.30).
Akilah Lewis and Minnesota were 17th in 43.78 seconds. Bertrand was back on the track for the women's 100m semifinals. The Simplex's sprinter was 20th in 11.37.
Alabama's Cherisse Murray was 19th in the women's shot put qualifying with 16.56m.
