Elias nets late winner for 'Calypso Stickmen'

Cana­da-based Aidan Elias fol­lowed up his game-ty­ing goal in a 1-1 draw with Bar­ba­dos with a late win­ner as the Glen “Fi­do” Fran­cis-coached T&T Ju­nior (Un­der-21) “Ca­lyp­so Stick­men” earned a come-from-be­hind 2-1 win over Guyana in the Ju­nior Pan Am Chal­lenge at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Com­plex Hock­ey Cen­tre in Wildey, Bridgetown, Bar­ba­dos, Mon­day (March 10).

The Guyanese, who blanked Guatemala 2-0 for their first win, took the lead against T&T in the 36th minute af­ter both teams bat­tled with­out much re­ward in the first two 15-minute quar­ters.

How­ev­er, four min­utes in­to the fi­nal pe­ri­od Adam Wy­att got the "Ca­lyp­so Stick­men" on lev­el terms af­ter which T&T piled on the pres­sure earn­ing six penal­ty cor­ners with­out find­ing the back of the net un­til Elias fired home the de­ci­sive item with less than two min­utes left on the clock.

The win lift­ed T&T to four points from two match­es, to trail un­beat­en Brazil who leads with a max­i­mum of six points while Guyana slipped to third, fol­lowed by Venezuela and Guatemala, both with­out a point.

On Tues­day (March 11), T&T will en­joy a rest day be­fore re­sum­ing ac­tion to­mor­row ver­sus Guatemala from 8 am, Venezuela on Thurs­day from noon, and Brazil on Sat­ur­day from 8 am.

Ca­lyp­so Stick­women hunt first points af­ter two heavy de­feats

Coach Kristin Thomp­son and the T&T U-21 women’s hock­ey team will be go­ing all out for their first points af­ter two heavy de­feats when they meet host Bar­ba­dos at 4 pm Tues­day (March 11).

The "Ca­lyp­so Stick­women" are bot­tom of the six-team round-robin group with­out a point af­ter an 8-0 loss on Sat­ur­day at the hands of Mex­i­co was fol­lowed by a lop­sided 13-0 ham­mer­ing from Puer­to Ri­co. Af­ter yes­ter­day's rest day, the na­tion­al team will be ea­ger for a much-im­proved per­for­mance.

Puer­to Ri­co and Mex­i­co are joint top of the ta­ble with six points each ahead of their match­es to­day ver­sus Guyana (10 am) and Guatemala (noon), re­spec­tive­ly.

T&T women will con­clude round-robin pool play with match­es ver­sus Guatemala to­mor­row from 10 am and Guyana on Fri­day from noon.

At the end of the com­pe­ti­tion in both cat­e­gories, the top two teams will con­test the gold medal match along with se­cur­ing the two spots avail­able to the 2025 Ju­nior Pan Amer­i­can Games in Paraguay this Au­gust while third and fourth-placed round-robin fin­ish­ers will com­pete for the bronze.
