Canada-based Aidan Elias followed up his game-tying goal in a 1-1 draw with Barbados with a late winner as the Glen “Fido” Francis-coached T&T Junior (Under-21) “Calypso Stickmen” earned a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Guyana in the Junior Pan Am Challenge at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex Hockey Centre in Wildey, Bridgetown, Barbados, Monday (March 10).
The Guyanese, who blanked Guatemala 2-0 for their first win, took the lead against T&T in the 36th minute after both teams battled without much reward in the first two 15-minute quarters.
However, four minutes into the final period Adam Wyatt got the "Calypso Stickmen" on level terms after which T&T piled on the pressure earning six penalty corners without finding the back of the net until Elias fired home the decisive item with less than two minutes left on the clock.
The win lifted T&T to four points from two matches, to trail unbeaten Brazil who leads with a maximum of six points while Guyana slipped to third, followed by Venezuela and Guatemala, both without a point.
On Tuesday (March 11), T&T will enjoy a rest day before resuming action tomorrow versus Guatemala from 8 am, Venezuela on Thursday from noon, and Brazil on Saturday from 8 am.
Calypso Stickwomen hunt first points after two heavy defeats
Coach Kristin Thompson and the T&T U-21 women’s hockey team will be going all out for their first points after two heavy defeats when they meet host Barbados at 4 pm Tuesday (March 11).
The "Calypso Stickwomen" are bottom of the six-team round-robin group without a point after an 8-0 loss on Saturday at the hands of Mexico was followed by a lopsided 13-0 hammering from Puerto Rico. After yesterday's rest day, the national team will be eager for a much-improved performance.
Puerto Rico and Mexico are joint top of the table with six points each ahead of their matches today versus Guyana (10 am) and Guatemala (noon), respectively.
T&T women will conclude round-robin pool play with matches versus Guatemala tomorrow from 10 am and Guyana on Friday from noon.
At the end of the competition in both categories, the top two teams will contest the gold medal match along with securing the two spots available to the 2025 Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay this August while third and fourth-placed round-robin finishers will compete for the bronze.
