Friends of national boxer Michael Alexander has started a GoFundMe account to help him with his recovery.
The fund, which was started yesterday, has a target of $250, 000 which according to Reynold Cox, the Technical Director of the T&T Boxing Association, will help to take care of him and the expected high medical bills which are associated with his injuries.
Cox explained that the boxer will have to heal from injuries sustained in an accident while riding his motorbike on January 28 in his hometown of Diego Martin.
After the accident, the boxer was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he had been listed in critical condition. The 28-year old boxer was released from the hospital on February 26 and is now at home in Petit Valley, Diego Martin.
Speaking to Guardian Media Sports yesterday, Cox said Alexander has a broken hand, some broken ribs and minor head injuries, which means that he is still under the care of doctors and seeking medical attention. The boxer is set to undergo regular therapy and according to Cox, a psychologist may also be needed to bring the boxer back to normalcy.
At the time of the accident, Alexander was a member of the T&T boxing team preparing for the Americas Olympic Qualifiers carded for Argentina in May.
Cox said he was one of the boxers whose association had high hopes of earning a qualifying berth. "There is the whole medical expense in terms of daily medication, x-rays, MRI and different scans that he may have to undergo. We're are finding people within the sporting and medical fields who would like to volunteer their services to help him, but obviously, there is going to be a very high cost," said Cox.
Within a few hours of starting the fund, it had reached a decent $250 and Cox said the interests to help the boxer has given them hope of them achieving their target.
