EDMONTON, Alberta – Barbadian jockey Da-sean Gaskin came away from the weekend at Century Mile with his maiden added-money success after picking up the feature CAN$50 000 Martin Deerline Juvenile Stakes.
Riding in the finale of Saturday’s seven-race card, Gaskin combined with 3-1 choice Thunder Roars to beat the two-year-olds by 3-3/4 lengths in a time of one minute, 05.45 seconds.
In a 5-1/2 furlong dash, Jakobs Rocket Boy showed early along with Tipsy Tales and Itsallgoodman, as Gaskin raced Thunder Roars five wide.
Tipsy Tales led briefly at the top of the stretch before Gaskin bought the brown gelding Thunder Roars with a strong stretch rally to take the honours.
Gaskin followed up on another seven-race programme on Sunday when he paired with 4-1 bet Perpetual Bliss, to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares in the $10 000 race three over 6-½ furlongs.
Three-to-one bet Stubborn Love logged the early fractions before being chased down by Perpetual Bliss, Gaskin getting the four-year-old roan filly to the wire 1-1/4 lengths clear.
Gaskin was upstaged on Sunday’s card by fellow countryman N’Rico Prescod, however, the 24-year-old capturing the opening two races with 3-1 chance Flashin Aces and favourite Doc Cope respectively.
Going 6-1/2 furlongs for the three-year-olds and upward in race one, Prescod stalked before getting Flashin Aces to the front at the three-eights pole and out-duelling favourite Silverfoot to win by a neck.
In another 6-½ furlong trip in race two, Spot on Dude and Above and Beyond pulled the field through the early fractions before Prescod and the five-year-old bay gelding Doc Cope surged to the front at the top of the lane and edged away to reach the wire by 1-1/2 lengths.
