Makayla Grant netted 30 goals from 42 attempts to guide Spartoms to a comfortable 54-13 win over Police Netball Youth Club (PNYC) in the A1 Division of the Lystra Lewis Port-of-Spain Netball League at the Woodbrook Youth Centre, last Saturday.
The goal-shooter, who captained T&T to its first Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth Netball Championship title, was ably supported by junior national teammate and middle-distance runner Shian Lewis (7/11) and Zakiya McKenna (17/31) who shared the goal-attack bib in the lopsided match.
For PNYC, Cheryse James (4/5), Tanisha Dann (7/9), Zion Homer (1/2) and Kaliyah Cooper (1/2) were the shooters.
Earlier the match-up in the A2 Division clash was intense but it was Laventille United edging Police Netball Section, 34-33.
Goal-attack Germaine Charles led the shooting with 16 goals from 26 tries followed close behind by goal-shooter Ayanna Peters with 15 of 38. They replaced opening pair Cherryell McIntosh (2/9) and Renee Mushington (8/15), respectively, in a match which had several lead changes.
Police held the advantage, 9-5 at the end of the first quarter but Laventille fought back in the second period to edge ahead, 15-14 at halftime.
In the third session, the Police unit didn’t stay down for long and pulled ahead 25-21, going into the fourth quarter. However, they were outscored 13-8 in the final period, to fall to the one-goal defeat.
For Police Netball Section, Gurshier Grant was perfect, hitting all five attempts before being replaced by Tamika John, who led the scoring with 16 off 30.
Patrice Thomas was the opening goal-attack and netted five in ten. She was replaced by Adeola Charles, who poured in seven off 13 tries in a losing effort.
