Barbados’ trio of International Master Orlando Husbands, Women’s Candidate Master Chanon Reifer-Belle and Women’s Fide Master Hannah Wilson occupy the top spots after seven rounds in the Subzone 2.3.3 Open and Women’s Chess Championships 2025 being played at the Cascadia Hotel in St Ann's, Port-of-Spain on Wednesday.
With just two rounds remaining, Husbands, the top seed at 2291, is in prime position to win the Open division with 6.5 points out of a possible seven.
His only blemish came in the third round when he drew with Jamaica’s Fide Master Raheem Glaves.
Husbands took over the sole lead by defeating T&T’s International Master Vishnu Singh in round six with the white pieces and followed up with a victory over Fide Master Kevin Cupid in the following round with the black pieces.
Singh is currently in second position on 5.5 points on the tiebreak, ahead of countryman Kevin Cupid, Jamaica’s Nathaniel Hope and Glaves, who are all tied on points.
In the Women’s division, Reifer-Belle defeated fellow Barbadian Wilson in a top of the table clash in round six to take over the top spot.
Reifer-Belle then took down the number one ranked player, T&T’s Women’s Candidate Master Ysvett Hermoso Rodriguez in the seventh round to move to six points.
Meanwhile, Wilson recovered from her loss to defeat Women’s Candidate Master Zara La Fleur in the seventh round and is currently in second position on six points, trailing Reifer-Belle on the tiebreak.
Hermoso Rodriguez is currently in third position on five points, ahead of Samantha Dolly, who also has five points.
