T&T utility player Joevin Jones and his Seattle Sounders team-mates extended their MLS is Back Tournament stay with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in their final Group B encounter at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Orlando, Florida on Sunday night.
The 28-year-old Jones missed his second straight match for Sounders, but he was not missed as team-mate Jordan Morris scored his team's second in the 34th minute, had an assist and earned a penalty to lead the team to victory.
Nicolas Lodeiro converted from the spot for Seattle's opening goal in the 16th minute, and Raul Ruidiaz added a second-half insurance tally as the Sounders finished Group B on four points with a plus-two goal differential. That will at least be enough to secure at least one of the top four third-place finisher spots in the last-16, though a second-place finish is also possible.
Vancouver has now conceded five goals unanswered after letting a two-goal lead slip away in a 4-3 loss to San Jose Earthquakes, the group leaders with seven points, back on Wednesday. On Sunday, they were outshot 17-8 overall and 7-2 in efforts on target.
They're still technically alive for one of those third-place spots as well but would likely have to beat third-placed Chicago Fire (3 points) by several goals in both teams' Group B finale and get help elsewhere.
Meanwhile, national midfielder Kevin Molino and goalkeeper Gregory Ranjitsingh and their Minnesota United, as well as utility player Alvin Jones and Real Salt Lake FC, will go into their respective Group D final day matches, both with a chance to top the pool.
With one round of matches left in the pool, Real Salt Lake leads on goal-difference from Minnesota United with both clubs on four points, one ahead of Sporting Kansas City while Colorado Rapids is bottom of the pool without a point.
Minnesota United will have the easier match in the final round as they come up against Colorado Rapids, on Wednesday (July 22) while Real Salt Lake faces Sporting Kansas City.
