IAN WASON
Queen’s Park completed an innings and 71-run win over Alescon Comets at Pierre Road, Felicity, but they will have to keep the champagne on ice for a few more days because of a protest in the T&T Cricket Board Premiership Division 1 competition.
Comets resumed their second innings on 69 for 5, yesterday and needing another 145 runs to make the Parkites bat again, but was bowled out for 140, giving the Port-of-Spain-based club victory.
However, while the team celebrated the win, the title celebrations were shelved because of a protest lodged by Powergen Sports, for their second-round match against Victoria Sports back in February. The hearing for that protest is set for this week.
The full details of the protest are not known. Victoria and Powergen played to a draw after Victoria scored 203 runs and Powergen responded with 130 for 1.
Meanwhile, At Gilbert Park Ansil Bhagan and Damion Joachim took five wickets each, in what can be title-clinching efforts if the protest lodged will have a decision in their favour. The five-wicket efforts by the bowlers, ensured Powergen’s victory over Queen’s Park Cricket Club II by 170 runs.
Powergen resumed their second innings on 22 without loss and recorded 177 for 5 declared. Cephas Cooper followed up his 107 in the first innings with 88 in the second innings.
Namir Seepaul was Queen’s Park’s best bowler with figures of 3 for 59.
Powergen then proceeded to dismiss Queen’s Park II for 124 in the second innings. Jason Batson was the best batter with 49 and wicketkeeper Jeremy Araujo contributed 30.
Ansil Bhagan had 5 for 47 and Damion Joachim had figures of 5 for 36, as Powergen secure the 170-run win and they will now await the hearing set for next week to see if they or Queen’s Park I are declared winners.
At Clarke Road, Keagan Simmons followed his hundred in the first innings, as he also hit 88 in the second innings in Central Sports total of 194 for 4 declared. Kjorn Ottley added 57.
Samuel Roopnarine took 3 for 69 to be recognised as Clarke Road’s best bowler.
Clarke Road, set 284 to win, closed on 83 for 6 as the match ended in a draw. Nicholas Sookdeosingh made 44 and Terrence Hinds took 2 for 0, to finish with match figures of 4 for 29 as he is looking to prove his fitness for a return to the Red Force team.
Merry Boys and Marchin Sports were crowned Premiership 2 North and South Champions respectively and will be playing in Premiership 1 in 2024.
