Queen’s Royal College could only manage a point from their trip to face Speyside High School in the sister-isle of Tobago on Tuesday when they played a 2-2 in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).
Coach Kenwyne Jones is convinced the Tobagonians got an illegal goal as the ball appeared to have clearly gone over the byline when midfielder Isaiah Mundy chased it down and pulled it back for Riquelme Phillips to score the equaliser in the 47th minute.
The Royalians, who have struggled with their play all season were hoping to get a morale-boosting win to build their momentum going into the coming Coca-Cola InterCol Play-Offs, and they got the perfect start when Tau Ramsey found the nets in the 10th minute.
But then came the incident that Jones believes had changed the outcome of the match.
Mundy went determinedly behind a ball that seemed to have been a loose one. However, Jones who said he did not want to talk too much about the incident, said the ball had clearly gone outside.
The referee’s assistant refused to raise his flag to signal that the ball went out, and Phillips capitalised on the opportunity.
Milez Johnson then pushed the home team ahead 2-1 with his 50th-minute strike. But with the game heading toward a win for the Tobagonians, Stephon James scored in the 85th minute for a share of the points.
In another game, Bishop’s High School in Tobago and Trinity College East also played to a 2-2 tie at the Plymouth Recreation Ground. Dimario Henry (31st) and Kirton Arthur (88th) were the scorers for Bishop’s while Desean Plaza (39th) and Khaleem Prince (76th) found the nets for the visiting Trinity College East.
