Chris Richards Sr landed the Professional title at the Ste Madeleine Golf Open.after he returned a score of 218 over the three days of play which took place at the Ste Madeleine Golf Course, Mamahambre, Ste Madeleine from April 4-6. Richards Sr’s top finish comes after his second place at the prestigious T&T Golf Open in Moka, Maraval some two weeks ago.
The national team coach took the lead after the first day and sailed to a comfortable 20-shot win over young Dravid Bhim (238) with another coach Ronald Bishop (241) in third.
Chris Richards Jr made it a father-son double when he retained the Championships Division with a tally of 70. The triumph is the second in the last four weeks for Richards Sr as he also secured the Championship trophy at the T&T Open
Richards Jr, who competed at the 2023 Pan American Games, started slowly hitting only 75 to lie in fifth on the first day as Jerseem Boodram was ahead (73). However, Richards Jr took command of the field with a score of 71 on the second day of action. The Diego Martin Central Secondary graduate showed why is the top local amateur player with 70 on the third and final day, Richards Jr, who is the highest-ranked local player (406th) on the World Amateur Golf Rankings, also won the ‘Nearest The Pin’ prize ahead of Zaid Khan.
Another world-ranked local (775th) Liam Bryden (220) was second while. Omesh Dinanath moved up to third after an outstanding score of 68 to tally 220.
Dinanath was at the bottom of the eight-man field after the first two days. Ayden Ali (224) was in fourth with Richard Ramperad edging Boodram for the fifth spot. Both ended on 226 with Ali getting the nod with a superior final-day score (76 to 78). Rampersad collected the Best Nett prize (214). He played with a handicap of 4.
Daurance Williams took home the First Flight. After taking the lead after day one Williams maintained his advantage to the final day to score 232.
Roger Williams (no relations) took the runner-up spot (234) with Amir Ali (241) in third.
In the Second Flight, Nandlal Ramlakhan emerged as the winner. The T&T Open champion was lying in second spot after the first of the two-day discipline on 78 behind Clinton Brewster (76). He improved to 76 on the second day to take the crown. Brewster fell back to sixth he with his 91. Baal Ramdhan (161) and Ammand Samuel (165) took the minor placings.
Shaheed Koondiah tooped the Third Flight field with 167 with Ronad Rampersad (170) and Aba-Bally Roophcand (177) in the second and third, respectively.
This edition of the tournament did not feature any female players. However, the Ste Madeleine Golf Club, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, is scheduled to hold its first-ever ladies’ tournament later this year.
