Richards Sr and Jr cop St Madeleine Golf titles

Chris Richards Sr land­ed the Pro­fes­sion­al ti­tle at the Ste Madeleine Golf Open.af­ter he re­turned a score of 218 over the three days of play which took place at the Ste Madeleine Golf Course, Mama­ham­bre, Ste Madeleine from April 4-6. Richards Sr’s top fin­ish comes af­ter his sec­ond place at the pres­ti­gious T&T Golf Open in Mo­ka, Mar­aval some two weeks ago.

The na­tion­al team coach took the lead af­ter the first day and sailed to a com­fort­able 20-shot win over young Dravid Bhim (238) with an­oth­er coach Ronald Bish­op (241) in third.

Chris Richards Jr made it a fa­ther-son dou­ble when he re­tained the Cham­pi­onships Di­vi­sion with a tal­ly of 70. The tri­umph is the sec­ond in the last four weeks for Richards Sr as he al­so se­cured the Cham­pi­onship tro­phy at the T&T Open

Richards Jr, who com­pet­ed at the 2023 Pan Amer­i­can Games, start­ed slow­ly hit­ting on­ly 75 to lie in fifth on the first day as Jer­seem Boodram was ahead (73). How­ev­er, Richards Jr took com­mand of the field with a score of 71 on the sec­ond day of ac­tion. The Diego Mar­tin Cen­tral Sec­ondary grad­u­ate showed why is the top lo­cal am­a­teur play­er with 70 on the third and fi­nal day, Richards Jr, who is the high­est-ranked lo­cal play­er (406th) on the World Am­a­teur Golf Rank­ings, al­so won the ‘Near­est The Pin’ prize ahead of Zaid Khan.

An­oth­er world-ranked lo­cal (775th) Liam Bry­den (220) was sec­ond while. Omesh Di­nanath moved up to third af­ter an out­stand­ing score of 68 to tal­ly 220.

Di­nanath was at the bot­tom of the eight-man field af­ter the first two days. Ay­den Ali (224) was in fourth with Richard Ram­per­ad edg­ing Boodram for the fifth spot. Both end­ed on 226 with Ali get­ting the nod with a su­pe­ri­or fi­nal-day score (76 to 78). Ram­per­sad col­lect­ed the Best Nett prize (214). He played with a hand­i­cap of 4.

Dau­rance Williams took home the First Flight. Af­ter tak­ing the lead af­ter day one Williams main­tained his ad­van­tage to the fi­nal day to score 232.

Roger Williams (no re­la­tions) took the run­ner-up spot (234) with Amir Ali (241) in third.

In the Sec­ond Flight, Nand­lal Ram­lakhan emerged as the win­ner. The T&T Open cham­pi­on was ly­ing in sec­ond spot af­ter the first of the two-day dis­ci­pline on 78 be­hind Clin­ton Brew­ster (76). He im­proved to 76 on the sec­ond day to take the crown. Brew­ster fell back to sixth he with his 91. Baal Ramd­han (161) and Am­mand Samuel (165) took the mi­nor plac­ings.

Sha­heed Koon­di­ah tooped the Third Flight field with 167 with Ron­ad Ram­per­sad (170) and Aba-Bal­ly Rooph­cand (177) in the sec­ond and third, re­spec­tive­ly.

This edi­tion of the tour­na­ment did not fea­ture any fe­male play­ers. How­ev­er, the Ste Madeleine Golf Club, which is cel­e­brat­ing its 125th an­niver­sary this year, is sched­uled to hold its first-ever ladies’ tour­na­ment lat­er this year.
