Gwendolyn Smith landed silver for T&T at the World Masters (Over 35) Indoor Track and Field Championships taking place at the Alachua County Sports Centre in Gainesville, Florida USA on March9.
Smith secured the runner-up spot in the women's 60-64 shot put finals with a 12.64 metres throw on Friday. Her medal-winning throw was achieved in the sixth and final round of the competition after she opened with 11.79m and improved to 12.03m in her second effort.
The talented thrower went further with her remaining throws (12.24m and 12.44m) before summoning her best effort in her last throw (12.64m). However, her top mark was not sufficient to catch Germany's Jan Muller Schidmt who won with 12.77m. American Shawn Lawson copped bronze (12.17). Another T&T competitor, Noelyn Toby-Davis, ended in 14th with 8.16m.
Smith won gold in the women's 60-64 javelin on Monday (36.87m) to secure another World Masters Indoor title following her success in 2010 and 2012. She was going for her second gold in Florida on Wednesday in the women's 60-64 weight throw but finished 10th (13.10) in an event she rarely competes in.
Smith, the vice president of the T&T Association of Masters Athletics will vie for her third medal in the women's 60-64 discus final set for today (Sunday), the final day of the Championships. Toby-Davis will also be among the starters.
Smith is the lone local athlete to mount the medal rostrum with her gold and silver medal efforts.
Geraldine George was 12th in the women's 50-54 weight throw final on Wednesday with a distance of 11.06m. Raymond Smith missed out on a lane in the men's 65-69 200m final after he clocked 28.89 seconds to cross the line third in heat three in the semifinal round on Wednesday. However, his clocking was the 10th fastest. The top eight advanced to the final.
Raymond won his preliminary round race on Tuesday, stopping the clock in 28.49 seconds in winning the first heat.
