Smith cops World Masters shot put silver medal

Gwen­dolyn Smith land­ed sil­ver for T&T at the World Mas­ters (Over 35) In­door Track and Field Cham­pi­onships tak­ing place at the Alachua Coun­ty Sports Cen­tre in Gainesville, Flori­da USA on March9.

Smith se­cured the run­ner-up spot in the women's 60-64 shot put fi­nals with a 12.64 me­tres throw on Fri­day. Her medal-win­ning throw was achieved in the sixth and fi­nal round of the com­pe­ti­tion af­ter she opened with 11.79m and im­proved to 12.03m in her sec­ond ef­fort.

The tal­ent­ed throw­er went fur­ther with her re­main­ing throws (12.24m and 12.44m) be­fore sum­mon­ing her best ef­fort in her last throw (12.64m). How­ev­er, her top mark was not suf­fi­cient to catch Ger­many's Jan Muller Schidmt who won with 12.77m. Amer­i­can Shawn Law­son copped bronze (12.17). An­oth­er T&T com­peti­tor, Noe­lyn To­by-Davis, end­ed in 14th with 8.16m.

Smith won gold in the women's 60-64 javelin on Mon­day (36.87m) to se­cure an­oth­er World Mas­ters In­door ti­tle fol­low­ing her suc­cess in 2010 and 2012. She was go­ing for her sec­ond gold in Flori­da on Wednes­day in the women's 60-64 weight throw but fin­ished 10th (13.10) in an event she rarely com­petes in.

Smith, the vice pres­i­dent of the T&T As­so­ci­a­tion of Mas­ters Ath­let­ics will vie for her third medal in the women's 60-64 dis­cus fi­nal set for to­day (Sun­day), the fi­nal day of the Cham­pi­onships. To­by-Davis will al­so be among the starters.

Smith is the lone lo­cal ath­lete to mount the medal ros­trum with her gold and sil­ver medal ef­forts.

Geral­dine George was 12th in the women's 50-54 weight throw fi­nal on Wednes­day with a dis­tance of 11.06m. Ray­mond Smith missed out on a lane in the men's 65-69 200m fi­nal af­ter he clocked 28.89 sec­onds to cross the line third in heat three in the semi­fi­nal round on Wednes­day. How­ev­er, his clock­ing was the 10th fastest. The top eight ad­vanced to the fi­nal.

Ray­mond won his pre­lim­i­nary round race on Tues­day, stop­ping the clock in 28.49 sec­onds in win­ning the first heat.

T&T sits at 32nd on the medal ta­ble with two medals - one gold and one sil­ver (1, 1, 0).

Hosts USA sit on top with 397 (133, 138, 126) ahead of Great Britain with 71 (32, 19, 20) and Ger­many with 53 (20, 18, 15).
