T&T’s Cherdine Sylvester and Cyra Ramcharan joined compatriot and defending champion Makeda Bain in the Girls Under-14 Singles semifinals of the Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC)-Barbados International Under-14 Tennis Tournament via contrasting quarterfinal wins on Monday in Barbados.
After qualifying for the main draw as the runner-up from Group Two with a 1-1 record behind Canada’s Katelyn Pasula, Sylvester secured a semifinal meeting with the top-ranked Bain after she swept past fellow T&T player Suri Ramcharan 6-3, 6-1, while third-ranked Cyra Ramcharan battled past St Kitts/Nevis Shreya Rawat 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) and will come up against second-ranked Pasula in her final-four match on Tuesday.
Both Bain and Pasula were handed quarterfinal byes after topping their round-robin pools at the Raymond Forde National Tennis Centre in St Michael on Sunday.
In Group One, Bain, who also won the doubles title last year, blanked Suri Ramcharan 6-0, 6-0, and Barbadian Ava Warner 6-0, 6-0, while in Group Two,
Pasula beat Sylvester 6-0, 6-2; Cybelle Ferrier of Suriname 6-0, 6-0; and Grenada’s Anabelle Stanislaus 6-1, 6-0.
Hills leads six T&T boys into quarters
The T&T boys contingent also dominated in their round-of-16 matches, with Josiah Hills, Novak Malcolm, Christopher Khan, Jack Brown, Jaysean Wells and Oliver Harragin all advancing to the quarterfinals.
The top-ranked Hills whipped USA’s Krish Talla 6-3, 6-3 and will face Barbadian Zane Kirton next after the latter ousted T&T’s Jacob Jacelon 6-3, 6-1, while fourth-ranked Malcolm crushed St Kitts/Nevis’ Brandon Brisbane 6-0, 6-2 to set up an all-T&T quarterfinal with Khan, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over St Lucian Sanjay Lake in their last-16 encounter.
In the bottom half of the draw, Brown humbled countryman Justin Duncan 6-0, 6-2 and plays compatriot Wells for a place in the semifinals after the latter stopped St Lucian Denney Estava 6-2, 6-4, while second-ranked Harragin outclassed the USA’s Henry Martin 6-1, 6-0 and will face El Salvadorean Mateo Gutierrez, who won 6-1, 6-0 over T&T’s Jaiden Gormandy.
In the Boys Doubles, T&T’s Duncan and Malcolm beat Barbadians Liam Cave and Joshua Franklin 6-2, 6-1 in their round-of-16 match, but Gormandy and Barbadian Cruz Thornton fell to the USA’s Martin and Talla 4-6, 2-6, while Luke Bellamy and Dylan Clifford of T&T were beaten by Brandon Brisbane of St Kitts/Nevis and Garrick Pilgrim of Barbados 2-6, 2-6.
