Lee-Anne Thornton moved to within a win of completing the treble in this year’s Sunshine Snacks Tranquillity Open Tennis Tournament after she stormed past Madison Khan in their Women’s Open Singles semifinal at the club’s courts on Victoria Avenue, Port-of-Spain, Wednesday.
Thornton booked a spot in her third final of this year’s competition with a comprehensive 6-0, 6-4 defeat of youngster Khan and will do battle with fourth-ranked Catherine Campbell-Frost in the final after the latter got the better of second-ranked player and Thornton’s women’s doubles winning partner Cameron Wong, 6-7(5), 6-1, 4-0 retired, in the other final-four clash.
So far this tournament, Thornton won the Mixed Doubles title with her husband, Andrew Thornton, over Nirav Dougdeen and Madison Khan, 6-3, 7-5, and then took home the Women’s Doubles crown with Wong after whipping Farah Chautilal and Catherine Campbell-Frost 6-1, 6-4, on Thursday.
On Thursday, the top-ranked Andrew Thornton and second-seeded Kale Dalla Costa will be fancied to win their respective semifinals against Keshan Moonasar and Vaugh Wilson from 3.30 pm.
On Tuesday in the quarterfinals, Thornton, who captured the Mixed Doubles title with his wife, Lee-Anne Thornton, on Sunday last, battled past eighth-ranked Dunstan Denoon 6-3, 7-6(3), while sixth-ranked Moonasar upstaged his Men’s Doubles winning partner and fourth-ranked Zachery Byng 6-4, 6-2, and on the other side of the draw, second-ranked Dalla Costa rallied past Seve Day 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and third-ranked Wilson punished Ethan Ammon 6-0, 6-1.
