The Trinidad and Tobago Legions used a balanced bowling attack to stifle the Barbados Pelicans and emerge victorious by 64 runs in their highly anticipated West Indies Breakout League clash here at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, San Fernando on Friday.

Touted as two of the pre-tournament favourites, the match never lived up to its billing with the Pelicans being bowled out for a paltry 101 in 19.3 overs, well short of the Legions’ competitive score of 165 for eight from their 20 overs.

Johann Layne (2-7), Navin Bidaisee (2-11), Mikkel Govia (2-14) and Joshua James (2-21), all delivered stingy spells to help rout the Pelicans, who only had three batsmen reach double figures.

The dangerous Kadeem Alleyne, Shaqkere Parris and Kevin Wickham were all back in the pavilion in a flash as the Pelicans slipped to 20 for three early on.

Nyeem Young tried his best to resuscitate the innings with a pedestrian 33 from 36 balls, while opener Leniko Boucher made 23 off 17 deliveries, but they failed to ignite a spark as wickets continuously fell around them.

By the time Young lost his wicket to leave the Pelicans tottering at 78 for six in the 14th over, the match was essentially over.

Number nine batter Zishan Motara was the only other batsman to score in double digits, scoring 11.

Earlier, the home side was boosted by its middle order after they found themselves in a spot of bother at 68 for five at the beginning of the 12th over.

But Joshua James slammed 39 from 20 balls with four sixes and one four, Jyd Goolie scored an unbeaten 38 off 27 deliveries with three fours and two sixes, and Navin Bidaisee made 24 to help the Legions finish with a flourish.

Junior Sinclair (2-17), Motara (2-22) and Ramon Simmonds (2-46), each took two wickets for the Pelicans.
