UTT surges to Tier 2 top with 4-2 win

The Uni­ver­si­ty of T&T (UTT) took the top po­si­tion in Tier 2 of the T&T Pre­mier Foot­ball League af­ter two rounds of match­es on Sun­day af­ter­noon.

This climb came af­ter they de­feat­ed Pe­tit Val­ley Diego Mar­tin Unit­ed (PVDM Utd) 4-2 at St An­tho­ny's Col­lege Ground, Morne Co­co Road, West­moor­ings.

The win came from goals by Ke­vaughn Con­nell in the 10th, Nicholai Hold­er in the 18th, Reinal­do Atwell in the 87th and Mar­cus Grif­fith in the 90+2 min­utes that took them to three points and a bet­ter goal dif­fer­ence.

The two goals from Unit­ed came from Kiron Man­swell (81st minute) and Je­lani Fer­ary in the 85th.

South­ern­ers San Fer­nan­do Gi­ants, who pulled off a sur­pris­ing up­set of Guaya Unit­ed 2-1 at the Man­ny Ramjohn Sta­di­um in Mara­bel­la on Sat­ur­day, sealed the sec­ond po­si­tion on the 11-team stand­ing with three points and a goal dif­fer­ence of one, as op­posed to UTT's goal dif­fer­ence of two.

The Gi­ants got a dou­ble from the boot of Dar­nell Hospedales in the 56th minute (penal­ty) and 82nd to hold off the Guayagua­yare men, who got a lone strike from Kirt­son Baird in the 57th minute.

Mean­while, third-place De­fence Force had their sec­ond drawn match of the League, com­ing from a 1-1 tie with FC Phoenix at the Dwight Yorke Sta­di­um in Ba­co­let, To­ba­go.

The Army Coast-Guard Com­bi­na­tion men were off to a per­fect start when Jer­wyn Balt­haz­ar put them ahead in the 35th minute. How­ev­er, late in the en­counter, the To­ba­go-based team got the equal­iz­er from Michael 'Jem' Gor­don from the penal­ty spot in the 76th minute.

In an­oth­er game at the week­end, Po­lice FC and Bethel SC played to a 2-2 tied at the St James Po­lice Bar­racks train­ing ground. Goals for the Law­men came from Ka­reem Grant (30th) and Josi­ah Phillip (71st), while Bethel's items came cour­tesy of a brace from Tee­jay Cadiz in the third and 46th min­utes.
