WASA outplays Powergen in table-tennis league

WASA Ta­ble Ten­nis Club made it two straight wins by 3-0 mar­gins in the T&T Ta­ble Ten­nis As­so­ci­a­tion Pre­mier Di­vi­sion 11-team league com­pe­ti­tion when they swept past Pow­er­gen at the WASA Sports Club, St Joseph, on Tues­day night.

Com­fort­able win­ners by the 3-0 mar­gin over Ser­vivors on Mon­day, Cur­tis Humphreys got WASA off to a win­ning start when he de­feat­ed Rod Singh 11-4, 7-11, 13-11, 11-4 while his old­er broth­er Alar­ic Humphreys hum­bled Josi­ah Joseph 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, and Christoff Robert over­came Anil Ram­lakhan 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9 to com­plete the win.

The vic­to­ry moved WASA to the top of the ta­ble with a per­fect 2-0 record and six points, three ahead of Queen’s Park Ta­ble Ten­nis Club, Care­nage Blasters, and Smal­ta Cru­saders who have all played one match each.

Cru­saders had a tougher task on their hands as they were tak­en the full dis­tance be­fore edg­ing past Ari­ma Hawks 3-2 at the Hi­malaya Sports Club in Barataria.

For­mer na­tion­al cham­pi­on An­tho­ny ‘Sand­fly’ Brown out­last­ed Rawle Par­sons 10-12, 11-5, 11-5, 11-13, 11-4 to give Cru­saders a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five se­ries.

How­ev­er, for­mer five-time na­tion­al cham­pi­on Reeza Burke drew Hawks lev­el cour­tesy of his 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 de­feat of N’Kosi Rouse while Em­manuel Chu­niesingh put Hawks ahead for the first time on the night when he bat­tled past An­drew Alexan­der 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3, 11-6.

Brown then kept Cru­saders in the tie when he bat­tled past Burke 12-10, 11-4, 11-4 in a clash of for­mer na­tion­al stand­outs to set up the fifth and de­cid­ing match in which Rouse got re­demp­tion via his 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 beat­ing of Par­sons.
