The Power Generation Company of T&T has downsized but they have decided to keep their commitment with the Secondary Schools cricket league and this year marks the 20th anniversary of their involvement with the sport.
One of the key men in starting the partnership between the SSCL and PowerGen was former communications manager at PowerGen, Omar Khan. The former West Indies manager was present at the opening of the 2016 season and spoke of the wonderful relationship between the stakeholders.
"In for the first year of the sponsorship we partnered with the legendary Brian Lara and in 1996 the League was known as the Bunty Lara PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League.
After this from 1997 to present the League is now a household name in Trinidad and Tobago and is known as the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League. PowerGen as the major supplier of Electricity to Trinidad and Tobago must be commended for sustaining this sponsorship and the members of the Secondary Schools Cricket League from the first president, Roy Jagroopsingh, to the current president Surujdath Mahabir, must also be credited for strategically partnering with PowerGen by fulfilling all the requirements of the Sponsor to ensure the 20 years of success for the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League.
"Any sponsorship that redounds to the benefit of the nation must be rated as special and I know, having initiated this sponsorship that in addition to the focus being on cricket I had also impressed to the League that other components of the sponsorship must be personal and character development of the young men and women who are involved in the League.
"I am proud to say that over the years we have seen many graduates of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League who have made successful careers for themselves, namely Darren Ganga, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Lendl Simmons, Darren Bravo, Samuel Badree just to name a few.
"I say to PowerGen and the Secondary Schools Cricket League, we need this kind of successful partnership to continue so as to harness the tremendous talent and potential of the young people of our nation so that they can become excellent role models for the people of our country."
