Major General Edmund Dillon, former chief of defence staff and present director of corporate security of Atlantic LNG Company, has created history once again.Having been noted as the only chief of defence staff to retire with two post- graduate master's degrees, he is now the only Chief of Defence Staff to be awarded the UWI Distinguished Alumni Award.The University of the West Indies Alumni Association in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the UWI identified 50 distinguished alumni for recognition as part of the celebration.
These awardees were chosen after a lengthy process from a pool of some 70,000 graduates and represent a cross-section of alumni who have demonstrated excellent leadership qualities and sound academic standings, rising to top positions in their occupation.The awardees, among whom were Chief Justice Ivor Archie; Central Bank Governor Ewart Williams; Larry Howai and Selby Wilson to name a few, were presented with their awards by the President George Maxwell Richards and the campus president Professor Clement Sankat at a ceremony on April 2.
Dillon has a certificate in management studies, a bachelor of science degree (double major) in sociology and government, an advanced diploma in international relations, and a master of science degree in international relations from the University of the West Indies.He is also a part-time lecturer in the Institute of International Relations, UWI.
Dillon also pursued academic studies in several military institutions abroad such as the UK-based Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, the Canadian Forces Staff School and the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College and the US Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) where he received several citations and a master's in military arts and science from CGSC.He has completed both the basic and the advanced alternative dispute resolution course from the University of Windsor, Canada.He is married to Ava Dillon and the couple has three children- Cleavon, Adeisha and Toni.
