Alum­ni body marks UWI's 50 years...

Ma­jor Gen­er­al Ed­mund Dil­lon, for­mer chief of de­fence staff and present di­rec­tor of cor­po­rate se­cu­ri­ty of At­lantic LNG Com­pa­ny, has cre­at­ed his­to­ry once again.Hav­ing been not­ed as the on­ly chief of de­fence staff to re­tire with two post- grad­u­ate mas­ter's de­grees, he is now the on­ly Chief of De­fence Staff to be award­ed the UWI Dis­tin­guished Alum­ni Award.The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies Alum­ni As­so­ci­a­tion in cel­e­bra­tion of the 50th an­niver­sary of the UWI iden­ti­fied 50 dis­tin­guished alum­ni for recog­ni­tion as part of the cel­e­bra­tion.

These awardees were cho­sen af­ter a lengthy process from a pool of some 70,000 grad­u­ates and rep­re­sent a cross-sec­tion of alum­ni who have demon­strat­ed ex­cel­lent lead­er­ship qual­i­ties and sound aca­d­e­m­ic stand­ings, ris­ing to top po­si­tions in their oc­cu­pa­tion.The awardees, among whom were Chief Jus­tice Ivor Archie; Cen­tral Bank Gov­er­nor Ewart Williams; Lar­ry Howai and Sel­by Wil­son to name a few, were pre­sent­ed with their awards by the Pres­i­dent George Maxwell Richards and the cam­pus pres­i­dent Pro­fes­sor Clement Sankat at a cer­e­mo­ny on April 2.

Dil­lon has a cer­tifi­cate in man­age­ment stud­ies, a bach­e­lor of sci­ence de­gree (dou­ble ma­jor) in so­ci­ol­o­gy and gov­ern­ment, an ad­vanced diplo­ma in in­ter­na­tion­al re­la­tions, and a mas­ter of sci­ence de­gree in in­ter­na­tion­al re­la­tions from the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies.He is al­so a part-time lec­tur­er in the In­sti­tute of In­ter­na­tion­al Re­la­tions, UWI.

Dil­lon al­so pur­sued aca­d­e­m­ic stud­ies in sev­er­al mil­i­tary in­sti­tu­tions abroad such as the UK-based Roy­al Mil­i­tary Acad­e­my in Sand­hurst, the Cana­di­an Forces Staff School and the Cana­di­an Land Forces Com­mand and Staff Col­lege and the US Army Com­mand and Gen­er­al Staff Col­lege (CGSC) where he re­ceived sev­er­al ci­ta­tions and a mas­ter's in mil­i­tary arts and sci­ence from CGSC.He has com­plet­ed both the ba­sic and the ad­vanced al­ter­na­tive dis­pute res­o­lu­tion course from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Wind­sor, Cana­da.He is mar­ried to Ava Dil­lon and the cou­ple has three chil­dren- Cleav­on, Adeisha and Toni.
