Elizabeth “Lady” Montano revealed that the secret to her soca superstar son Machel’s success is the core values she and her husband, Winston “Monty” Montano, instilled in him.
She was addressing a rapt audience at the 2023 NGC Bocas Lit Fest, at the AV Room, NALIS, Port-of-Spain, yesterday, during her talk with Keron “Sheriff” Thompson segment about her book King of Soca, the biography on the life of Machel.
Montano said, “We were very clear in what we wanted for our children, Marcus and Machel, to learn. We inculcated certain core values like teaching them to work hard, education was important, that they must share, whatever they do must be done with integrity, and be resilient.
“I tell people when they say to me I must be proud that my big son is a big pilot with CAL and the other son is a big entertainer, that’s not what I’m proud of.”
She said she tells them that she’s very proud of the core values that they instilled in their children, they led by example as parents, showed humility and they saw them manifest in them as men.
Montano also said they took care of Darryl Henry aka “Farmer Nappy” from a very early age. She shared that on the day they were moving to Siparia, Monty met Nappy fighting on the street, he picked him up and told him to go help his two sons. Montano said from there they became very good friends and Nappy came like a third son to her. She said Nappy’s mother asked her to take care of him before she passed at 40 years.
