Po­lice have made sig­nif­i­cant head­way in­to the killing of six-year-old Kylie Mal­oney.

This is ac­cord­ing to Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent, Rishi Singh, who at the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS) me­dia brief­ing on Thurs­day said her killing may be due to gang ac­tiv­i­ty.

Mal­oney was killed at her San­gre Grande home on Sun­day.

She is the first child to be killed for 2023. In 2022 19 chil­dren were mur­dered.

Po­lice have solved eight of those mur­ders. In 2021, 11 chil­dren lost their lives to crime. Three of those cas­es have been solved.

Head of the Spe­cial Vic­tims De­part­ment of the TT Po­lice Ser­vice, Snr Supt Claire Guy-Al­leyne asked to par­ents to be care­ful of who they have around their chil­dren.

She said her unit works close­ly with the Chil­dren's Au­thor­i­ty and en­cour­aged the pub­lic to make a re­port to the po­lice if they see a child's life is at risk.

Mean­while Singh said out of the 605 homi­cides record­ed for 2022, po­lice have solved 75 and 121 peo­ple have been ar­rest­ed, 89 of those were charged for var­i­ous cat­e­gories such as do­mes­tic, gang ac­tiv­i­ty etc.

Singh said this brings them no sat­is­fac­tion and en­cour­aged to pub­lic to con­tin­ue work­ing with the po­lice.
