Police have made significant headway into the killing of six-year-old Kylie Maloney.
This is according to Senior Superintendent, Rishi Singh, who at the T&T Police Service (TTPS) media briefing on Thursday said her killing may be due to gang activity.
Maloney was killed at her Sangre Grande home on Sunday.
She is the first child to be killed for 2023. In 2022 19 children were murdered.
Police have solved eight of those murders. In 2021, 11 children lost their lives to crime. Three of those cases have been solved.
Head of the Special Victims Department of the TT Police Service, Snr Supt Claire Guy-Alleyne asked to parents to be careful of who they have around their children.
She said her unit works closely with the Children's Authority and encouraged the public to make a report to the police if they see a child's life is at risk.
Meanwhile Singh said out of the 605 homicides recorded for 2022, police have solved 75 and 121 people have been arrested, 89 of those were charged for various categories such as domestic, gang activity etc.
Singh said this brings them no satisfaction and encouraged to public to continue working with the police.
