An attorney employed with the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), who was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), has been granted $15,000 own bail after she appeared in court.
Ambekha Yankerran-Seepersad pleaded not guilty when she appeared before Magistrate Alexander Prince at a virtual hearing in the Couva Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Yankerran-Seepersad, 39, of Carapichaima, is currently a legal intern at WASA.
The court heard that around 4.37 pm on September 30, Yankerran-Seepersad was involved in a traffic accident near Ramadar’s Liquor Mart, Mission Road, Freeport.
It was alleged that her eyes appeared bloodshot, while the responding officer reported smelling liquor on her breath and felt she was over the prescribed limit of 35 mg per every 100 ml of breath.
Yankerran-Seepersad was taken to the Freeport Police Station where she later agreed to provide a specimen of breath, which registered a reading of 168 mg per every 100 ml of breath. A second breath test administered at 6.14 pm registered 139 mg per every 100 ml of breath; while a third test at 6.21 pm registered 152 mg per every 100 ml of breath.
Prince read out the charge of DUI, which was contrary to Section 70 A (1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act.
In submitting her bail application, Yankerran-Seepersad’s attorney Bhimal Maharajh requested she be released on her own recognisance, as she had no prior convictions or pending matters.
The matter was adjourned to October 28.
