Off-duty police officer Kyle Assivero heroically attempted to save 33-year-old Denzil Brewster’s life during a bar brawl at La Vegas Bar in San Fernando. But it not only turned deadly but the fight left the officer injured.
Brewster of Solomon Street, Princes Town was stabbed to death during the confrontation.
Police said around 8.30 pm, Brewster was liming at the bar located at the corner of Lord Street and Coffee Street in San Fernando when a dispute erupted between him and another man.
In front of several patrons, the assailant, described by police as “stocky” built, drew a knife from his waist and began stabbing Brewster multiple times.
Assivero, 24, of Claxton Bay who is assigned to the Couva Police Station tried to intervene but got injured.
Officers of the Southern Division Emergency Response Patrol (ERP) quickly arrived at the scene and transported both Brewster and Assivero to the San Fernando General Hospital.
However, despite the efforts of the medical team, Brewster succumbed to his injuries around 9.12 pm while undergoing emergency surgery for wounds to his chest and upper hip.
PC Assivero is said to be in stable condition.
The suspect, who ran away, remains at large.
Officers of Homicide Region III, including PC Seedath and WPC Rampersad are continuing investigations. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS or the nearest police station.
