Gov’t ratifies CoP’s extension as Erla nears retirement age

Ahead of Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er, Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher, reach­ing the re­tire­ment age of 60 next week, cab­i­net took the de­ci­sion to ex­tend the years of ser­vice of the Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice in the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS), for the pe­ri­od May 15th 2023 to May 24th 2024.

A re­lease from the Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter, Fitzger­ald Hinds, on Tues­day stat­ed Hare­wood-Christo­pher, who cur­rent­ly serves as Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice as an of­fi­cer in the First Di­vi­sion, will at­tain the com­pul­so­ry re­tire­ment age of 60 years on May 15th, 2023.

How­ev­er, ac­cord­ing to Sec­tion 75 of the Po­lice Ser­vice Act, the Pres­i­dent of the Re­pub­lic of Trinidad and To­ba­go, where it is con­sid­ered in the na­tion­al in­ter­est, may ex­tend the years of ser­vice of an of­fi­cer in the First Di­vi­sion af­ter the of­fi­cer has reached the pre­scribed age of re­tire­ment.

“This ex­ten­sion will be “for a pe­ri­od of one year in the first in­stance and there­after, sub­ject to an an­nu­al re­view, for a max­i­mum of two fur­ther pe­ri­ods of one year each,” ac­cord­ing to the Act,” the state­ment read.
