Cypress Hills tenants are finally getting assistance from the Housing Development Corporation after they staged protests to complain about a suffocating sewer stink at their apartment buildings in San Fernando.
Its been two years since the residents have been experiencing overflowing toilets, sewer fumes, cracked tiles and an invasion of rodents and cockroaches in their home.
On Tuesday, the HDC promised to assist the tenants.
In a statement, HDC said it had noted the complaints made by some residents of Cypress Hills, Union Hall community.
“A visit was made by a team headed by the Regional Manager of HDC South yesterday. On Tuesday, another visit was made by the Divisional Manager, Estate Management and other officials from the South Office, to assess in greater detail, the complaints made by some residents of Building 23,” the statement said.
The HDC also visited the apartment of Christine Cedeno who said her children were developing skin rashes because of the filth.
“A visit was made to the home of Ms Cedeno’s unit in order to assess the complaints, lodged by her,” the HDC said.
The Corporation said it will replace damaged kitchen cupboards, reaccess all plumbing fixtures and fittings for leaks as well as facilitate repairs. HDC said it will also reposition and replace defective lighting and install proper venting of the plumbing lines.”
The HDC said subsequent visits will be made to other units to comprehensively assess the issues raised and other matters such as the maintenance of the open areas will also be dealt with as a matter of urgency.
On Monday, tenants complained of deplorable conditions.
They said the suffocating stench of sewage has been making them sick.
Loose tiles and tall bushes in front of their apartment buildings have also created a health hazard.
More than 18 families in the apartment complex were suffering because of the smell.
Mold was also seen around the areas where the leaking sewer line flows. The tenants also called for a comprehensive cleanup of the area in front of their apartments.
