For­mer High Court Judge and Gov­ern­ment Min­is­ter Her­bert Vol­ney has died.

The news was con­firmed to Guardian Me­dia by his for­mer Cab­i­net col­league Dr Roodal Mooni­lal who said he had been in con­tact with the fam­i­ly.

Vol­ney be­came a Judge in 1994 and left the high court bench to con­test the 2010 elec­tion un­der the Peo­ple's Part­ner­ship. He won the St Joseph seat and be­came the coun­try's first Min­is­ter of Jus­tice.

He was sacked from the post in 2013 amidst the in­fa­mous sec­tion 34 scan­dal, and he left the par­ty soon af­ter.

Con­do­lences have al­ready start­ed com­ing in from for­mer col­leagues.

An­oth­er Min­is­ter in the PP Cab­i­net Dr De­vant Ma­haraj said, "Al­ways a quick wit he of­ten paint­ed him­self as the cus­to­di­an of Catholic val­ues in cab­i­net and rep­re­sent­ed those with mixed her­itage as he was equal­ly proud of his Do­mini­can roots. "

Min­is­ter in the Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture Avinash Singh post­ed, "We sat on op­pos­ing po­lit­i­cal par­ties but we were al­ways cor­dial. Late­ly, he was very in­ter­est­ed in my agri­cul­tur­al post of pro­duce on my par­ents' farm. I in­vit­ed him to vis­it on­ly a few weeks ago, but it nev­er ma­te­ri­al­ized. May his soul finds eter­nal peace and his fam­i­ly find strength at this time.
