Former High Court Judge and Government Minister Herbert Volney has died.
The news was confirmed to Guardian Media by his former Cabinet colleague Dr Roodal Moonilal who said he had been in contact with the family.
Volney became a Judge in 1994 and left the high court bench to contest the 2010 election under the People's Partnership. He won the St Joseph seat and became the country's first Minister of Justice.
He was sacked from the post in 2013 amidst the infamous section 34 scandal, and he left the party soon after.
Condolences have already started coming in from former colleagues.
Another Minister in the PP Cabinet Dr Devant Maharaj said, "Always a quick wit he often painted himself as the custodian of Catholic values in cabinet and represented those with mixed heritage as he was equally proud of his Dominican roots. "
Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture Avinash Singh posted, "We sat on opposing political parties but we were always cordial. Lately, he was very interested in my agricultural post of produce on my parents' farm. I invited him to visit only a few weeks ago, but it never materialized. May his soul finds eternal peace and his family find strength at this time.
