Minutes after Akeem Greene stopped his car in La Romain, a gunman approached and opened fire, killing him instantly.
Investigators are working to determine the motive for the attack and why Greene exited his vehicle at the corner of Ethel Street and Byron Street on Thursday night.
Police said around 10.15 pm, they received reports that a man was lying dead. Officers arrived at the scene five minutes later and found Greene’s body on the western side of the roadway. He was shot several times.
Officers visited Greene’s brother, Lorenzo, at his La Romain house. The brother said around 9.45 pm, a Pleasantville man came to his house driving a silver Mazda 6, which belonged to the victim. The man handed Lorenzo the car keys and left.
Police later found out that Greene was with the Pleasantville man and they were driving along Ethel Street when Greene stopped and came out of the car.
An unknown man reportedly approached Greene and began firing. The Pleasantville man said he drove the vehicle to Lorenzo’s home.
Police retrieved a spent 9mm shell and a live 9mm round, both marked “Luger,” as well as fingerprint impressions from the shattered car door glass. A post-mortem is scheduled at the Forensic Science Centre.
Ag Insp Ramsaran is leading the investigation.
