Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar is describing Attorney General Reginald Armour's news conference today as a "bizarre" one that has only served to raise more questions than answers.
Today AG Armour addressed the media about the recent award of $20m to the 9 men accused of killing businesswoman Vindra Naipaul Coolman in 2006.
The award was made after the State failed to provide a defence in a malicious prosecution suit brought by the men after they were freed.
Following the news conference Mrs Persad Bissesar said " it is simply beyond belief that a file against the state involving one of the most high-profile murder cases in our nation’s history can “simply disappear” from the office of the Solicitor General. It also beggar’s belief that Mr Armour feels he can distance himself from this scandal even though the Solicitor General’s office falls directly under his control."
She said Armour’s call for an investigation is clearly an attempt to pass the blame for this scandal onto anyone and everyone apart from himself, his predecessor Faris Al -Rawi and the head of the Cabinet Keith Rowley.
This scandal represents a serious indictment on the competence and integrity of AG Armour, his predecessor Faris Al Rawi as well as the head of the cabinet Keith Rowley and should serve as grounds for immediate resignations," she said.
However, she said members of this PNM regime consistently demonstrate that they believe they are above the law and above demands for accountability from the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
