Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has responded to critics who believe a watch he wore at Tuesday’s Emancipation Day celebrations cost over $1 million and have called for an Integrity Commission probe.
Rowley posted to his Facebook page yesterday, “Glad to see that you’ll are so interested in my Tsar Bomba watch! BTW I see that this item has also sparked conversations about who gets a tax-free salary. All ministers and Members of Parliament pay taxes on their income. I pay the full amount of taxes on my salary.”
Commentators on social media believed it was a Richard Mille watch that costs around US$360,000
They wanted to know if the Prime Minister spent his own money or received it as a gift.
They said if it was in fact a gift, he should have referred it to the Integrity Commission.
The Tsar Bomba costs about US$399 on Amazon.
Before he had responded on social media, Guardian Media sent the Prime Minister a screen shot of one of the comments on social media asking him to provide a receipt if he did in fact purchase the watch. That same post asked if it was a gift and if he had declared it to the Integrity Commission.
The Prime Minister responded hours after in the Facebook post saying, “I’m sorry to disappoint, at least I could afford a US$300 watch. Those who tief (sic) out the Treasury will never wear that.”
